This is what we do in the clinic - there are many ways. We'd need more information but remember stress will influence ovulation over all.

Bleeding (not a period) can happen when there is a change in hormones - not enough to influence ovulation.

As far as damp - try eating warm and cooked foods rather than raw foods for a little while - I bet much of what you are saying here will dissipate.

Thanks again for fantastic information Nat, love your site!

I was wondering if you could explain what is happening when you have irregular periods? I can have anywhere from 6 weeks to 4 months between periods after coming off the pill July last year.

Are there ways I can promote a more regular cycle and I'm assuming this would be effecting my fertility?!

Thanks! :)

Thank you so much! That heathtalk and the above was really informative - particularly because I seem to have a "wet phase" (ovulation), following which I'm dry but then do get some "moist"ness (but not wet). I think I've always had this (I remember thinking when I first starting menstruating that it was a sign that my period was coming). But it makes sense for me because I have PCOS and I definitely have ovulation issues because I have low progesterone levels/get brown staining.

I started menstruating again last year (yay!) and since then I have had short luteal phases (around 5 days). I recently started working with a holistic doctor who has prescribed vitex and bio identical progesterone after ovulation for my low progesterone levels. But, surely there is more that I can do to help my body out (especially because I see the progesterone as a short term thing)? As for "excess damp", I wonder if that could be toxins sticking around (I'm already eating 98% gluten and dairy free)? (I have cellulite, pimples and extra fat that just won't go away. I have also historically had digestive issues but this has improved significantly since I started meditating).

I'm quite curious about exploring the chinese medicine perspective but unfortunately I'm not in Australia - are there any resources you could recommend? (chinese medicine for women's health and anything informative on this topic would be awesome) I want to give my new doctor a good go and I'm not sure how trying to do both holistic and chinese medicine would work out - too many cooks in the kitchen?

On another note - could you also explain how periods happen when you don't ovulate? Is it progesterone made by the adrenals that keeps the lining in place?

What great information, thank you Nat! What should I do if I suspect excess dampness, is this something a cleanse could help with or should I visit an acupuncturist/TCM practitioner? Or have you written a post on this in the past? I have a heavy period and it lasts for about 6 days and I get quite painful menstrual cramps. Thanks again!
