The liver has five detoxification roles, the most common we speak of is phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification. It’s the second of these we’re most interested in for happier hormones (even though phase 1 is important – don’t worry I’ve got that covered too). This is known as the conjugation pathway. Through conjugation, the liver is able to turn hormones and various other toxins into excretable substances. If the diet isn’t great, your internal toxic load is greater than what the liver can cope with or you’re playing catch-up in recovering from synthetic hormones like the pill, the mirena or even from IVF treatments, you can find yourself feeling pretty lopsided.
It was during my research of cleansing and detoxification in the evolving creation of Cleanse Yourself, I learnt excess hormones like testosterone and oestrogen may bind to fibre. That’s one simple trick to eliminate those that are causing a host of issue related back to hormone imbalance or hormone excess. Fibre assists the liver, in moving out the unwanted – hormones included. Double win!
Almost all hormone imbalance conditions benefit from giving the liver a little tender loving care. These include (but are not limited to);
+ Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or PCO (and all it’s associated symptoms including facial hair and acne)
+ Post pill/mirena/implanon amenorrhea
+ Ovulation pain and period pain
+ PMS – anxiety, depression, sore breasts, headaches in the lead up to the period
+ Fibroids and other growths like polyps
+ Weight gain
The list goes on!
It’s this mix of organic ingredients like psyllium, slippery elm that tick off more than just the liver. These also help to gently sweep the gut as well as provide this pre-biotic factor. Prebiotics are those which feed the probiotics, aka- good bacteria which we’ve become so fond of and over time, can be equally if not more important than probiotics to continue to help with renewal of this good bacteria. We’ve added the benefits of chia and flaxseed to really seal the deal in hormone help. And there we have it – a trifecta! A very simple mix that supports the gut, regulates the liver and balances hormones.
The cleanse shake can work alone, in a glass each morning mixed with water, diluted juice or a smoothie. Some put it on top of their breakfast – I don’t mind how you use it, just start using it! But what’s more, if you are one of the unlucky ones dealing with imbalance, coupling this with cleansing works an absolute treat to set the wheels in motion.
