Overcoming depression & anxiety & why you must blame your hormones – I chat with Dr Sherrill Sellman.

I’m back with Dr Sherrill Sellman today. We sat and chatted a few weeks back (we talked weight loss – check that out here) and I could seriously sit and listen to this woman all day long because she knows SO much about hormone health and women’s wellness.

Today we’re talking about depression, emotional health and how it’s all linked to our hormones.

Today you will learn:

  • how diet is linked to your emotional health (because the gut is the pivot of our health right!?)
  • when we are under stress (think demands, inflammation, body issues etc – these all drive stress which affects our adrenals), and when the adrenals are compromised that drives anxiety
  • women are more vulnerable to depletion of specific neurotransmitters which contributes to emotional issues
  • how your gut is the emotion centre
  • why adrenal exhaustion is a real diagnosis with symptoms of fatigue, tiredness after eating, feeling wide awake at night (your second wind), poor memory, loss of muscle mass, body pain, 4 am
  • anxiety etc.
  • why antidepressants aren’t a solution – in fact quite the opposite

Tell me what you think below. Have you been adrenally fatigued? I’d love to hear your experiences – have you overcome anxiety or depression?

Thank you for a very informative session – I found myself nodding along to this. After turning 37 this year, I found myself having high anxiety (sometimes to the level of panic attacks) prior to a period. At times I thought I was losing my mind, which led to more panic at the thougth I would no longer be able to maintain a job/social life/relationship. During a particular bad day of it I rushed from my office to a GP in tears looking for answers. She looked at me strangely and was completely puzzled, and recommended that I changed the type of pill I was on. Other GPs suggested blood tests which revealed nothing. I then found a wonderful natropath who suggested Bio PMT, as well as magnesium to support adrenals. I feel much more “human” again. And I truly support the idea that diet & exercise helps the body to heal itself. I hope this provides some hope to others!

Thanks so much for this! Have been not myself for most of this year, and had come to the conclusion that it is probably due to hormones. Listening to this I am going ‘Yes! That’s how I feel!’

Great info and I think I need to get her book. Really want to try grain free eating, however I am getting tested for celiac disease soon, so need to keep eating gluten for now.

Wow. I just want to say that I’ve been watching this series and Sherril is such an intelligent and fascinating woman to listen to. Keep talking to her whenever you can!

I think it is very dangerous to warm people off anti depressants. My child and I would probably be dead if i had not taken them. I had severe PND and they really saved me. I came off them easily a year later and continue to be healthy, but there are many times they are vital.

I think for minor anxiety and depression a good psychologist and psychiatrist are great and the strategies they provide are excellent.

Absolutely Margie – which is why we encourage people to do so under the guidance of the practitioner. But knowing that this hormone imbalance is treatable is key to helping people move away from a drug that can be very difficult to withdraw from.

Great discussion but what are the things to eat, avoid, try and do etc that help heal people struggling with depression? I want to consider this approach but without more practical advice I am reluctant to take this risk as going off medication has not worked for me in the past. Obviously doing so has to be under medical direction but as you explained, not all doctors know about these methods. If I could approach a doctor armed with the information then maybe this way could be achievable for me and I am sure many others.

Anja – that’s really difficult because your GP’s knowledge is very different to this approach. Therapeutic fats are key to fuelling the mind and overall hormone function. It would be great to find a wholistic GP.

However, it does have excellent facilities and a highly educated, English

speaking work-force. However, today, our topic of discussion is upon why investors prefer

newly launched condos in most cases. Find a mentor: This is another factor that one should not forget about.

Any suggestions of ways to reduce/prevent antidepressant withdrawals when stopping the antidepressant?
