Can’t work out when you ovulate? Here’s a quick tutorial and ovulation calendar

Here we go! There are so many variations to what a ‘normal’ cycle should look like, but for the purpose of clarity – I’m going to talk about how your ovulation calendar should look, in theory. We can discuss variations down the track.

Here’s something I don’t want you to do. Don’t get all hoity-toity on me, and start to obsess about ovulation. It isn’t useful – it adds stress to the already stressful fertility game, and keeps your mind constantly thinking about it. But, it can be useful as a diagnostic tool, to see how things are going hormonally, and for you to have some peace of mind that you are indeed ovulating. So, let’s hop to it.

Ovulation calendar – how a typical month should look

This is how a typical month should look. I want to explain the chart below thoroughly, so I’m going to break it down to simple town. Remember, this is all a rough guide time-wise.

All women will vary – and that is perfectly normal.

chart1

Ok, so it’s fairly standard for your period to last anywhere from 2-7 days.

In the clinic, I like to see a period be no longer than 5 days and we implement measures to ensure this is achieved. It’s also important that blood loss isn’t too significant. It should be no more than 6 tablespoons – not that I want you to measure! But it’s a good guide (however, it can be difficult to tell with the standard of sanitary products nowadays).

chart2

If you experience a 1-day bleed that is quite dry and dark without proper flow, there is a chance you aren’t ovulating and it’s a good idea to speak to a natural fertility specialist.

Now, from this point on is where the fun starts. To put this into practice, you will need to learn to feel what your body is telling you.

Noticing your body’s signs

As grey as it sounds, you can actually ‘feel’ ovulation via your cervical mucus. You know when you get your period? It feels a certain way ‘down there’, (generally, it feels wet and warm around the opening of the vagina). Ovulation is mostly the same, although it feels wet and cold.

It’s not necessarily about what you can physically see in terms of cervical mucus, it is more about what you can feel.

Typically you should have several ‘dry’ days before they start to notice a small amount of mucus (days 6-9), followed by the feeling of moistness (days 10-12). This can last for several days until you begin to feel signs of optimal fertility – clear and stretchy cervical mucus (remember it feels wet and cold).

Cervical mucus is essential for conception. It is the sperm’s mode of transport up to the eagerly waiting egg. The cervix secretes this vital fertile mucus. When the semen is ejaculated into the vagina, the sperm will make it’s way up to the cervical crypts (where the mucus is secreted from) where it stays for a bit, and takes a little rest to be fed and rejuvenated (I find it hilarious that it’s already hungry!), before it continues on up to meet the egg.

If you take a look at fertile cervical mucus under a microscope, it has many little channels – unlike infertile mucus which has a criss-cross pattern that makes it impossible for the sperm to swim through.

chart3

Fertile mucus can last for several days.

Ovulation isn’t the day you see the most fertile signs – it’s the LAST day that you see or feel it.

So in this instance, it’s cycle day 15 (even though there has been fertile mucus present for 3 days) because it’s the final day that this wet feeling is experienced. The tricky part is it isn’t something you will know until after the event. But don’t think you can’t fall pregnant outside this time. It happens! You might like to read about that more here.

Now from cycle day 16 right through to 28, you’ll notice there is very little or no mucus. This is normal. During this time (it’s called the Luteal Phase) your body is busy either implanting an embryo or preparing for your period.

Should you notice mucus or discharge at this time, it may be indicative of excess ‘damp’ in your body, which may or may not be affecting your fertility – it wouldn’t hurt to get that checked out.

What is damp? It’s what Chinese medicine refers to when there is an accumulation in your body as a result of some organs not working as well as they should. It can be easily fixed. Think of it like damp that can sit under a house.

What to do when your cycle doesn’t seem quite right

If your cycles are a bit out of whack – say ovulation is occurring earlier or later – it’s a good idea to have this checked out by somebody like me, because hormonally you may be lacking. And, the consequence of that can be ‘subfertility’.

This means that you’re potentially fertile, but hormonally you’re imbalanced. For example, ovulating on cycle day 9 is a problem because it means an immature follicle is being released – making it almost impossible to be fertilised. Or, your luteal phase (from ovulation to the period time) could be too short, meaning that if there is a growing embryo, it can’t continue to grow because it isn’t being supplied hormonally with all it requires.

In almost all cases, we can treat this and begin to improve fertility. We have a swag of tricks that can be applied in these circumstances.

Want to dive deeper into understanding your cycle?

I hope this has been informative and you have a better understanding of ovulation. Remember, we can fall pregnant outside these times in some circumstances – but being able to read your body is a great start.

You can dive deeper into this stuff with my Debunking Ovulation Masterclass, which gives you more detailed and specific information to allow you to understand your own menstrual cycle. This can be particularly helpful if you’ve recently come off the pill and you’re trying to work out what’s going on.

*Please note. I’d love to offer advice and be able to answer your questions below regarding ovulation and pregnancy. Unfortunately, without having seen you, it’s impossible for me to give thorough replies.

Thank you Nat for this great post. I have a short ovulation phase and a short luteal phase. Would you recommend accupuncture for this?

    Thanks!

    • August 8, 2012 By admin 9:25 am

Absolutely – that and herbal supplements – it is very treatable! Depending on how short – it may be essential to treat.

Hi nate,I have a question….in CD 11 the eggwhite stage: does that mean you are right BEFORE ovulation or literally ovulating that day or very soon before/after?in CD 12 I felt creamy very tiny lump.i b cd13 I felt wtery stage mean you are literally ovulating? From the couple helpful posts I read I know that is the most fertile time however, I’m just wondering what cues you can see that tell you when you are actually s o now I am past ovulation or pre ovulation or actually ovulating.what is my stage.

The last day that you have EWCM is ovulation. Hopefully that helps! x

Thank you Natalie…this was so helpful, as usual!

I use a DivaCup so I actually know how how many “ounces” I shed every month — I’d say it’s usually closer to 5 oz (or 10 tbs). Is that bad? If it matters, there is water mixed in there too … which sometimes settles to the bottom. (Sorry, this is getting really TMI!) I also have clots, even though I’ve been seeing an accupuncturist for 3 months. They are getting smaller, and the blood is getting less brown. Does that mean I’m making progress? My accupuncturist said that getting your period shouldn’t be a huge ordeal like it is for me every month — no crazy cramps, no crazy mood swings, no heavy bleeding, etc. Do you agree?

I also feel like ovulation lasts so long for me… last month my CM was REALLY watery for 4 days, (like gushing out of me) then I had 2 days of eggwhite. It just seems like something’s “off” with the timing. I’m trying to be patient and just trust my TCM doctor, but it’s hard. I also ovulate on day 18 and have a 12 day luteal phase, so on the surface it seems like I have normal monthly cycles if you aren’t looking at my chart. But again, the timing is off. My husband and I have been trying for more than a year, so I know my hormones are off. He has no sperm issues.

Do you have any tips for sub-fertile women or poor ovulators? Thank you for your very readable and informative blog!

    • August 8, 2012 By admin 9:56 pm

Karen, difficult to say without seeing you – answer in short, so long as the luteal phase is more than 11 days, and that you can pin point ovulation, it shouldn’t be a problem. Unless of course you do get crazy periods, then there may be more to it. So long as you remember ovulation is the last of those days. Remember sex is really important all month around as I’ve mentioned so many times before. Nat

Do you think it is normal to have delayed ovulation with breastfeeding a toddler (22 months, feeding 6ish times in 24 hours still)? I’m taking 5-6 weeks to ovulate and then have a 14 day luteal phase. I’ve got a history of long cycles so not sure if it’s the breastfeeding affecting it or if I should be able to work towards shorter cycles.

    • August 8, 2012 By admin 9:57 pm

absolutely normal – that is exactly what breastfeeding will do.

    • September 11, 2012 By admin 8:19 am

This is very normal as breastfeeding inhibits ovulation – sometimes your body will follow through and other times it won’t. It’s totally acceptable.

    Hi Nat

Such an interesting, and relevant, post! Quick question – I have been tracking my cycles via BBT and according to Fertility Friend I ovulated on Day 20, with watery white CM. From Day 24 – 26 I had proper stretchy EWCM. Should I go by my temperature or my CM when looking for ovulation?

I have been told not to try for another baby (my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage) until I can get my ovulation below CD20, as it looks like my progesterone levels are too low.

Do you have any advice on how to bring on ovulation earlier in my cycle (or bump up my progesterone)? I am currently taking Chaste Tree supplements and will be having monthly acupuncture, around a week after my period begins.

Is there anything else I can be doing?

    Thanks xx

    • August 9, 2012 By admin 3:05 pm

Hi Kate – looks like you are definitely ovulating later.
It’s difficult for me to comment without actually seeing you – nothing is a one size fits all approach.
One thing that will definitely be beneficial in the luteal phase is regular sex. This helps increase uterine blood flow and keeps progesterone up.
Definitely go by EWCM not temperature – temp is good to use in conjunction with CM but not a definite on its own.

I have a 24 day cycle with a 3-4 day period. Usually there is no dry days after my period it goes straight to wet. My last cycle was 6 days overdue with positive pregnancy tests then on day 6 streaking, followed by blood it was lighter than my normal period. We did more tests that were negative after the bleeding was in force for the day. There were no big clots, no pain (a little back pain but I cosleep with my 4 year old who sleeps in the craziest positions). I have always had a short cycle but have managed to get it from 18 days to 23/24 days. I’ve never had a 28 day cycle. Does this mean my luteal phase is not long enough or that my body is not supplying the right hormones. We have had this experience & a miscarriage at 7 weeks last year. I am 38 & very healthy, active & eat extremely clean. We are vegans & have been for over a year (we were not with the miscarriage but were vegetarians with our 4year old son)

  • August 9, 2012 By Mrs G 7:03 pm

Hi, Natalie! Thx ‘for your informative post…. my cycles are totally different from what you describe. I’m 28 and I have PCOS (one side only), acne and facial hair. At the moment I’m on clomid, but it seems it doesn’t work so I’ll soon start fsh injections. What should I do to improve my chances to conceive? I don’t smoke, don’t drink, eat a gluten free and mainly vegetarian diet (red meat is bad for my acne), no processed food and very limited sugar (my doctor says it is important that my weight does not increase even if my BMI is less than 25), I don’t have a job and I do get enough sleep. I’m seeing a psychologist for my anxiety for medical procedures. I honestly do not know what to do more or what I’m doing wrong and infertility is a source of stress and anxiety. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thx a lot.

    • August 9, 2012 By admin 9:27 pm

Mrs G – absolutely many woman’s cycles will be different to this. This is what they should look like in a ‘perfect’ situation. Is clomid not working because you aren’t testing for a positive ovulation test? Are you getting a menstrual period? The emotional factors associated with reproductive health and infertility can have a big impact on fertility – it makes for a tricky situation because the stress about having a baby, in turn creates the anxiety and it becomes a tricky circle. If you are having acupuncture and implementing treatments that help your body to cope better, this can be a great start.

      • August 10, 2012 By Mrs G 9:45 pm

Thx for your reply. Yes, I always get a period (even if cyclus lenghts vary) and sometimes even very painful ones. I had 5 cycli of clomid and I got ovulation twice (checked by a sonogram), however my blood test showed an hormonal imbalance that prevents me to get pregnant. I will follow your advice and try to address stress even if (for the moment, at least) I won’t try acupunture because it scares me (I know it’s not painful, but the very idea terrifies me). Thx a lot.

  • August 10, 2012 By admin 9:57 pm

Please know Mrs G – there is always a solution, you just need to find somebody who will look hard enough.

Great article Nat, thanks for the info it will definitely help!

  • September 6, 2012 By Krystal 6:59 pm

Such a detailed article, thank you! I am currenty having issues with my cycle after being on the Depo Provera injection for 18 months. My last injection was in July 2011 and my cycle has only just become regular, however the entire cycle only lasts 14 days. I am currently getting accupunture and am on an aray of vitamins and herbs for this but I am wondering if you have any other ways to assist in elongating my cycle back to normal? I am very healthy, have a high alkaline diet and exercise often. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

    • September 9, 2012 By admin 10:55 pm

it’s difficult – certainly not a one size fits all approach. See what it does over the next few cycles and reassess. We do also offer online consults if that helps. Nat

    This is so helpful! Thanks!

Do you have any recommendations on finding a “you” in the U.S.? I’m not sure what to be looking for and when I look online it is kind of overwhelming.

    • September 11, 2012 By admin 8:18 am

Not that I know of! I’m sure there are people that specialise in natural fertility but when we combine it with TCM in the way that we do – it is very unique! Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

When is the best time to have (unprotected) sex if you DO NOT want to get pregnant ?

Is it straight after your period finishes ?

My period is perfect 28 day cycle and lasts 3-5 days (last 2 days I use panty liner).

    • October 3, 2012 By admin 2:21 pm

Count 3 days from ovulation – and then go for gold! Generally when there is no fertile mucus, you are considered out for the count!

      • December 17, 2013 By Emily 4:16 pm

Hi Nat, so does this mean that on the wet days (Days 13, 14 and 15 in your example) you are able to have unprotected sex? So in your example, on day 15 you can have unprotected sex but not again until Day 19? Thanks.

  • October 9, 2012 By Brooke 1:44 am

Hi! I have a quick question to ask. My cycle length is usually 32 days long and I usually have ovalutation on day 17. I have normal mucus throughout ovalution and become dry after. Unfortunately for the past year I have started being wet three to four days before my period and then have mucus throughout my period, which usually lasts for days. Is the wetness before period a bad thing?

    • October 9, 2012 By admin 7:30 am

Wetness before the period isn’t bad necessarily – we have a mucus plus that comes away just before the period. Are you trying to fall pregnant? Obviously you don’t have to answer that on here – but it can be something to look at and a sign of weak digestion from a TCM viewpoint if you have cervical fluid throughout the cycle not necessarily at the right times.

  • October 10, 2012 By Gemma 11:18 pm

Great post! I’ve come off the pill 5 months ago & cycles are out of whack, last one was 73 days!

Had stretchy cm 9 days ago for 3 days but have just got it again and am co fused!! Do you think I should see someone if we don’t get pregnant this month??

    Thanks for advice x

    • October 13, 2012 By Nat 7:46 pm

whenever you see stretchy mucus, your body is at least trying to ovulate. Time sex with this for best chances. It’s not uncommon for several attempts – the key is watching for it. So if you see fertile mucus and then it comes back several days later, the first time you saw it was simply an attempt to ovulate. The second time (assuming it is the final time) will be ovulation.

    Hi Nat!

I’m wanting to you your thoughts on the copper IUD? I had one in for the last year and a half- but got it taken out last week- as i found from reseraching on the internet- it gives side effects: of weight gain, and copper overload in the body if left in for more than a year- which is similar to estrogen dominace in the body— was i right to get it taken out? I do feel it was not right to have some metal inside me for that long period of time, but i am terrified of falling pregant now….

    Kindest Regards, Liz

    • October 13, 2012 By Nat 7:48 pm

All interventions come with side effects. I’m not a huge fan (as you can probably tell). I think allowing your body to do what it’s built to do is best. Learn to read your fertile times – this is key, and can be extremely successful once you know.

  • October 12, 2012 By mrs Rob 7:25 pm

just wanting to know if you can ovulate way early in your cycle? since having two children (with no hassels at all) i have now been ‘trying’ for over a year with no success. i seen to get the ‘wet mucus’ at the end of my period and it is a dark brown colour becuase of the finishing of m y periods. i usually only get one day of bleeding (and its not very heavy) then a few days with nothing and then a “blob” of blood as a last thing ending with the wet mucus that is a dark brown colour about 5 days after starting my periods. i have down ovulating tests and they have said that im ovulating and tests wit h a dr that has said im fertile and ovulate and doesnt know whay im not falling pregnant. do you have any suggestions as to why im may not be (hubby is all good too). i have had 2 cesearans and have heard that that can play a role aswell. thankyou! robbi

    • October 13, 2012 By admin 7:49 am

This is very possible. Ovulating in the period time however may make it difficult to conceive because hormonally the follicular phase (from cycle day 1 to ovulation) is too short effectively meaning the follicle released is too immature to fertilise. This can indicate there is some hormone imbalance – which is very treatable but would explain why you are having trouble falling pregnant also. So essentially yes you are ovulating which is wonderful – but you would need to look at some treatment benefit the menstrual cycle. I hope this helps! We do offer online consultations. Nat x

  • October 13, 2012 By mrs Rob 6:03 pm

hod o you do online consultations? does it cost much? im gettin desprate and dont know what to do. i know something must be out because i fell pregnant so easily the first two times, im just not sure what it is that is out! i would love some guidence as to what i can do to help my chances to be higher. i also believe i have had some very early miscarriages as i have had a whole week of heavy bleeding (which is unusual for me) and it usually is either earlier or later than my normal cycle. thankyou for answering back to me!!

    thankyou,

    • October 13, 2012 By Nat 7:49 pm

Online consultations are $80 for initial and $40 for follow up plus supplements.

Before doing anything – check in with your husband. Is his semen up to scratch? Stress, smoking, alcohol, high intensity exercise.. all these things will affect quality and contribute to miscarriage.

  • October 19, 2012 By Jac 10:38 pm

Hi, I’m so glad I pointed in your direction!

Is it possible to have a relatively regular cycle (22 days between periods and 3 days of “bleeding” ie dark brown smears with not much flow) and occasional EWCW and still not be ovulating? I read something on an other article of yours about if you get periods you are ovulating and it confused me.

    Thanks for your help.

  • January 15, 2013 By Karen 1:03 am

    Good Morning,

Thank you so much for a wonderful article. It sheds some light on the situation. I am someone of older age 42 and I am trying to concieve my first child. I have always had regular 25-28 day periods. I have tried IVF twice and both were unsucessful. I know that my age is gettung up there and it might be to late for me, but I was wondering if you had any suggestions for me. One thing I have never understood about my body is maybe around day 8 I get this clearly jelly discharge. It lasts for a couple days and then I appear to go dry. Then I seem to have what I call ovualtion pain in my lower abdomen and lower back on Day 15. At this time I also experience wetness. Can you help me understand what you think is going on with me. All the fertility doctors here say there is nothing wrong with my reproductive systerm. It is unexplained infertility.’

    Thank you in advance,

    Karen

    • January 30, 2013 By mnfadmin 9:46 pm

It appears you ovulate CD 15 or thereabouts. When you have the wetness. The earlier discharge is a mucus plug that is normal and forms post period. It comes away well before ovulation. This is all very normal.

Thanks Nat this has been such an informative tutorial. Can u plz help me in resolving my issue as i have been searching long but has not come to any conclusion. i have been married for a year and a half but as my husband is abroad so we have been together for just 3 months. during this time i used to get most of the pregnancy symptoms early own like bloating, food cravings, mood swings, breast tenderness and the symptoms remain for the whole month as not just before menstruation , then my mensus gets disturb not that they get irregular but i start having dark brown discharge instead of fresh blood. All pregnancy tests come up negative so no pregnancy thats for sure.otherwise i always have very regular periods just like the one mentioned in your first chart.

    waiting for your reply

    thanks

Question: I have had the merena in for 4 years, in witch I never had a period. The merena came out 3 weeks ago, on invesitigation the ginea discovered a cist the size of a 22 week old fetus, the cist was removed as we’ll as my left overy because the cist caused some damage to the overy. My hubby and I want to try for a baby, the window for us to have another baby seems so small, since I have had 3miscarrages before and our chances with one ovary now seems even more impossible to have a little one. I do have 2boys aged 5 and 9, but we want to try one last time, since this might be our last chance to have another baby. How would I know if I am oviolating if I have not had a period for so long? I have heard of stories of people that conceive right away after the merena is removed. Do you have some advise for us? Do you think it is a good idea to get some medication to promote oviolation, or in your opinion should we just wait it out? We would appreciate any advise, opinion, it is always better to also seek someone elses point of veiw on a matter. Eagarly awaiting your reply. Joan

    • January 30, 2013 By mnfadmin 9:45 pm

I don’t advocate for medication to promote ovulation – but rather search to find why ovulation isn’t occurring in the first place. There is always a reason as to why and it is important to find a solution. If you haven’t had a period, then you aren’t ovulating. You do have to take action and find some answers though – it seems your hormone imbalance is stopping ovulation. Have you looking into PCOS?

Hello. I’ve had menstrual changes lately. I had severe pain and delayed period in December (32 day cycle). In Jan. I had a 30 day cycle (usually my average) and in Feb., I had a 25 day cycle that I’ve never had before. I have many symptoms of underactive thyroid and my mother developed hypothyroidism after having children. I’m currently taking Vit. B Complex, Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin D, Essential Fatty Acids, and Prenatal as we are trying to conceive our 3rd child. I also have many of the classic hypothy. signs such as feeling cold, exhausted all the time, hair texture changes, weight gain, feeling sad. My GP initially thought that I had the baby blues as these changes started 1 year ago, when my daughter turned 1. I have been battling these annoying symptoms since then and we have been ttc since the summer with no luck…..I am also undergoing acupuncture in the ear, elbow, and knee to hopefully improve thyroid function as my TSH is considered normal , but my free T-4 is low normal and almost out of the normal range. I apologize for writing a book here….I’m just desperate for any advice so I can get pregnant soon! Thanks

So I was told I had a short luteal phase..through basal temp checks I have consistently for the past 4 months ovulating on the 14 th day..but my doctor said to increase the length of the luteal phase put me on 50 mg of clomid I did the 1st cycle and through temp checks I haven’t ovulated..its like the meds stopped ovulation.. Is this possible..do I do another cycle..is there a different drug to try..or go holistic? Please help

    • March 3, 2013 By mnfadmin 4:25 pm

Unfortunately clomid won’t fix your luteal phase – there are lots of things that will though! Go holistic if you know where to go – are you local?

What if my cycle is 32 – 32 days, does this mean my ovulation is likely to start a few days latter? I’m trying to work out exactly when would be the “normal”time for me to begin ovulation as I’m beginning to wonder if I am one of those people who’s timing is out of wack.

That is correct – just a few days later.

    • March 7, 2013 By Nat Kringoudis 7:32 am

Yes ovulation is occuring for you CD15 not CD12. Wetness is the key indicator always.

  • March 7, 2013 By maya 12:18 am

hi Nat. I was wondering if you’ve come across this problem before. I’m getting a light bleed around day 25 which doesn’t feel like a period ie lighter and no cramps or breast tenderness. This bleed seems to be instead of ovulation (my bbt stays low and no cm). Then about 14 days later I get my proper period. Makes TTC rather difficult.

    • March 7, 2013 By Nat Kringoudis 7:31 am

Yes – this is ovulation. Sometimes you will see some spotting when there is a shift in hormones.

      • March 8, 2013 By maya 1:07 am

Even though there is no rise in temp and no ‘fertile’ mucus?

  • March 25, 2013 By bebe 5:08 am

Hi Nat.nearly 7 weeks ago i had my implanon removed after 3 years of having in my arm.

Last 2 years there were no period for me at all and still nothing.

From my first day of removing i have done lots of opk test with one nearly positive about 2-3 weeks ago. But all the time i have felt dry. Until 5 days ago i felt very wet .that wetness stayed for 4 days. I have checked once my mucus ( second day of wetness) and it was strechy. I did have pain in my right side especially in my last day of wetness that pain was very strong and uncomfortable. I done opk test during those 3 wet days when on the 3rd day was dark but again not as dark as should be. Suddently i got very dry for the last 2 days. I’m still having mild pain on my right side but its not bad.

What is going on with my body. Did i finaly ovulate? Its nearly 7 weeks since removal and more then 2 years without a period .can you tell me if i should worry?

  • April 2, 2013 By Nyree O’Donnell 3:40 pm

I had my period which finished on the 2/3/13. Then from the 15 – 18 March, i had small amount of brown bleeding. I took an ovulation test today (2/4/13) and it came babk positive, however a pregancy test was negative. We are trying to concieve but not sure about details.

    Help

    Confused

    • April 2, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:10 pm

I’m confused by this sorry Nyree. You had spotting 3/15-18/13, which sounds like ovulation if you had your period two weeks after this. Now you are ovulating.

Hi, I have been having regular unprotected sex for almost three years now, I am ovulating regulary but havnt got pregnant, I do only have 1 ovary.. Could this be why or should I go back to the doctors ??

    • April 9, 2013 By mnfadmin 8:00 am

Perhaps you might like to have a semen analysis to see how your partners semen quality is. You also need to time sex with your fertile signs.

  • April 8, 2013 By aduke 5:16 pm

I had my period on2/4/13 and finished on 8/4/13 I want to know if it is normal and when am suppose to ovulate

    • April 9, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:57 am

Ovulation can occur any time during the month – it is best to watch your fertile mucus to confirm this.

  • April 10, 2013 By Rebecca 7:19 pm

Hi I’m experiencing a very unusual period. It has come a few days (max 7 days) early, it’s very light flow(not enough to use tampon or towel) it’s like a brown tinged mucus.

I’m usually fairly regular 28-32 days, with a medium flow.

I’ve also had no cramping this month. I’m a bit worried as this is our first month ttc!

I’ve taken two hpt both neg. what would you recommend?

    • April 10, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:26 pm

not to get your hopes up but it sounds like implantation bleeding. Wait until the actual due date of your period and then test. I never was one to get a positive test until my period was actually due. x

Hi my question is, i looked on the ovulation calculator and it says that my ovulation days is between the 10th and 15th of april my partner and i had unprotected sex on the 10th whats the chances of me still falling pregnant we are planning on having a baby but i just want to know if i still have a chance at all or should we wait and try again next time

    • April 16, 2013 By mnfadmin 9:15 am

Check out the video on the site that details this out for you.

  • April 13, 2013 By bronwyn 6:46 pm

And the other question i also have is how long after u feel the ovulation pain of the egg do u actually get to ur full peek of ovulation

  • April 16, 2013 By cat 7:22 am

Hi there I unfortunately suffered a miscarriage in Nov. Since then I think I have had regular period although I do suffer from a treated underactive thyroid. This month was first time I tried opk and got a positive result day 11 and 12 then negative day 13. I notced a lot of ewcm but it is on day 11 and according to my calendar I’m not due to ovulate until around day 17 due to cycle around 31-32 days. I read your second last paragraph about a problem if ovulate too early. Do u think I could be suffering from this? If so what should I do? We so want to conceive a healthy baby as soo as we can. Thank you.

    • April 16, 2013 By mnfadmin 9:14 am

So you’re ovulating around CD11 or 12 – that’s enough to make a baby! Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re ovulating when your calendar says so. Always watch your fertile egg white cervical mucus and time with this. So long as it isn’t any less than CD11 you’re good to go!

  • April 17, 2013 By cat 7:31 am

Thanks so much we have been trying the last few months but no joy and I’m hoping its because we were using the calendar when actually just be ov earlier. But we will keep up the bd as much as we can just in case. So just to clarify- if opk is +ve and I have ewcm does that definit mean I’m ovulating then? Sorry if its a silly question. Thanks again.

    • April 17, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:56 am

exactly – If you EVER see egg white fertile cervical mucus, you are considered ovulating. If you’re getting a +ve OPK then that is ovulation CD11 or 12 or whatever it is (it can change month to month).

  • April 21, 2013 By Lulu 6:56 am

    Dear Natalie,

If sperm are able to live inside the vagina for up to 72 hours would that also mean that you need to be careful on the wet days leading up to ovulation; in addition to the 3 days after ovulation?

Thank you for this wonderful post!

  • April 22, 2013 By Rebecca 10:04 am

Hi Nat, my son is 9 months old. I am still breastfeeding him several times a day and also at least once during the night. Before falling pregnant my periods were usually regular 28 days. I have been having my period for 5 months now, but it now is heavier than before I had my son, and lasts for 6-7 days rather than 5. My cycle is also at least 30 -32 days. Is this because I am breastfeeding, or is it something I should be getting looked into?

    • April 22, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:45 am

Babies change everything! I’d say it’s probably a combination of all of these things – certainly nothing to be concerned about though. x

  • May 1, 2013 By Leeanne 4:39 pm

My son is 8 months old and I completely stopped breast feeding two months ago – partly due to work and I want my second close in age. My period has not yet returned but I have been keeping track of my CM to see when ovulation returns. I have noticed that I get 2-3 days of ewcm, then two weeks later I get cramping like I would when I used to get my period but don’t get my period and have another 2-3 days of very wet ewcm. Is this normal, can you ovulate without getting a period?

    • May 1, 2013 By Leeanne 8:04 pm

Sorry, I forgot to ask, is there anything i can do to encourage a healthy cycle and ovulation sooner or is it just a matter of time?

  • May 2, 2013 By Melissa Francis 6:55 am

Ok I had contraceptive implant taken out 13th October 2012, period on 13 November 2012 heavy lasting 5 days, then next period 21st December 2012 very heavy lasting 5 days. Lastly light spotting no 10th Jan 2013 ending on 12th jan 2013. Got positive pregnancy test 4 th deb 2013. My due date is confirmed by scan to be 11 October 2013. Ok my question is if according to my APP I conceived 17th Jan 2013, so does that mean I ovulated 10 days after the first day of a very light period (only panty liner needed). I thought that wasn’t possible. Please help the curiosity is killing me. Am I just a miracle? Or does this happen sometimes?

  • May 3, 2013 By Nour 3:26 am

Hi I have a question about timing. I usually have just 1 day each cycle of EWCM and it generally occurs 3 days before ovulation according to my BBT charting. Is it more important to time intercourse on the day of EWCM or the day of, or day before, ovulation as indicated by the temperature chart?

    Thanks!

Hi I’ve been pregnant and had 2 healthy babies a yr apart. No problem falling first time round for both. Not on any contraception and know when I ovulate. Period started 28th April and since 5th may we have been having fun every second day. I should be ovulating now but instead have been cramping alot more than the last two pregnancies. Could it be that we are already pregnant and I’m not getting that clear mucus discharge I always get? My periods are on about 30-32 day cycle so come end of this month I would be 4wks pregnant thanks so much. Love your website

If you are still breastfeeding this is normal. Otherwise it looks like your hormones need some balancing.

i am on day 18 of my cycle. my cycle is 30 days. i have very dry cm. i do use a ovulation calender and have been for the past year and my af comes on time with the calender. my question is is it normal to have dry cm on day 18 of my cycle. the calender said that i should ovulate on the on may 19 day 17 of my cycle.. i have also been checking my cm every day. now for me my cm is normaly like lotion most of the month and dry 3-4 days before aunt flo. i was worried about this but the doctor said that it was ok and that i dont have any infections. i never have ewcm. when i do get it its after sex which i think is my hubby sperm. but i dont get it at anytime in my cycle without sex. i do have 3 children from another marriage youngest is 13. i am 38 hubby 30. we have been preg 3 times all lost to miss. last one lasted 3 months. i dont check my temp. is this normal please give any advice that you can. i know this is advice but all will help. i have an appt in october with a fertility doc.

    Hello

My husband and I have started trying for a baby. Last month unsuccessful and I was 26 day and this month is 24 day, the first day of my last period was 9 May 2013, doing my calculations meant I would have been fertile from Thursday to Monday (yesterday). Does this sound about right? Also, this time, except for Friday, we have been having sex every day, is that ok? or is it too much? Some websites say every day, some say every other day and some say two-three times a week. What would you advise?

I don’t think there is anything else I can do now and just hope my period doesn’t arrive, so fingers crossed. But some insight on the above would be good.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks

    Gemma

    • May 23, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:34 pm

It’s best to have regular intercourse right through the month rather than confine it to what you believe is your fertile window. This is important to increase uterine blood flow and nourish the reproductive organs. I suggest you watch my ovulation video: http://melbournenaturalfertility.com.au/?p=4715

      This will help you. x

  • May 26, 2013 By Corinne 3:43 pm

    Hi there,

I have a 28 month old toddler who is still breast fed. I have still not had a menstrual cycle since becoming pregnant with him. I night weaned him around the first week of April and 23rd of April was so excited when I saw a ‘clump/plug’ of egg white mucus in my underpants. The next day I went back to having BIP of mucus for 3 ish days and then again noticed the egg white looking mucus (around the 26th of April). We were intimate as we were so excited that perhaps we would be able to conceive again after so long of no sight of fertility return. About 5 days later (around the 30 april/ 1 may) I again had a couple of days of egg white looking mucus (so we were intimate) 2 days later I woke in the night feeling very nauseas and then about 10 days later was very crampy and headachy, as well as feeling nauseas like I was going to have a period but nothing has happened at all. I waited until last week (around 24th may) to do a home pregnancy test thinking that even after the second suspected ovulation that should be enough time to know if im early stages pregnant and it was negative. Do you think my body is just warming up for return to fertility…. I’m so confused. All of the signs (nausea in the night 2 days after, cramping but no period etc) are exactly like what I had when I was pregnant with my first son. What are your thoughts.

    • May 26, 2013 By Corinne Piper 3:56 pm

ALso I’d like to add that prior to becoming pregnant I had stopped taking the pill and was charting using the billings method to achieve pregnancy so I know my body, but I have to say it is all very different post partum.

      • May 27, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:23 pm

Hi Corinne – it is so tricky for me to say exactly but it is very normal when breastfeeding – even just one feed a day for some women, that they see the body attempting to ovulate. It seems to me as though your body may have actually ovulated given your symptoms. Sometimes what we think is our period coming may actually be the body ovulating. At least your body is gearing up which is a fantastic sign.

Hello, i have two boys and im considering trying for a girl using the shettles method. ive been keeping track of my period since feb. 28, 2013 (that was the first day, and from the very first day i start to bleed until there is absolutely no blood, is about 10 days. i think that so many days is strange but my period is always regular. so for the past 4 months it has been as follows 2/28/13 – 3/8/13, 4/2/13 – 4/12/13, 5/2/13 – 5/12/13 so if im not wrong my cycle is about 32 days. my question is, if i am suppose to ovulate on day 18 why do my breasts get sore and bloating occure always 1 week before i bleed? is my ovulation off? can you help me figure out when i ovulate by the information i have given? if so, i would really appriciate your input. thank you so much, kriaty. 🙂

    • June 2, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:41 pm

Always watch your cervical mucus – it will tell you when you are ovulating. Most peoples cycles vary from 26-32 days. That is perfectly normal.

    • June 2, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:44 pm

Lauren – may I suggest you search my blog for posts on the pill. I talk about why it is important to have 6 months off the pill before conception to get your body back on track and to restore the vitamins and minerals the pill severely depletes which may affect your baby if they are diminished. I can help you for sure with your inquiry although I’d need much more information. I do offer online skype consults – maybe this would be the best way forward. One thing I can say is don’t fall into the trap of ‘trying’ – regular sex all month round is key. I wish you wellness in your quest! x

  • June 2, 2013 By Georgina 6:56 pm

Hi I have a cycle length of 32/33 days but was diagnosed with pcos 4 years ago. I came off the pill 4 months ago and my periods are regular. I’ve had blood tests with the doctor and they say my hormone levels are ok…I get the c.mucus so would you say it sounds like everything is working ok? Also if my cycle is 32/33 days is it best to be ‘active’ from day 12-20?

    • June 2, 2013 By mnfadmin 10:45 pm

Sounds like the PCOS isn’t of concern if you are having regular cycles and your tests are good. Watch your mucus to know when you are fertile but be sure to have sex all month around outside of the period time. The biggest mistake baby seekers take is limiting sex to the window they believe they are fertile in. Watch your mucus but have sex the entire month around. Happy Baby Making!! x

    • June 8, 2013 By mnfadmin 8:42 am

      Hi Ankit,

I need so much more information to best answer your question. I do offer online skype consultations which is the best way to help you. Giving advice from the little into I have here isn’t ideal. That said, your GP is doing what they know best to do but you must understand that it is very possible to fall pregnant if you have PCO – you just need to understand your body better to allow you to do so. x

I have a 99% accurate menstrual cycle of 24 days but lately it has changed one month it was 25 the next 24 and this month 26. How will I know if I am ovulating with these changes? For as long as I can remember which is a long time it has been 24 day cycle…

Help!! I’ve been trying to get pregnant for almost one year after my first miscarriage

    • June 13, 2013 By mnfadmin 11:38 pm

this is very normal and so many things will affect ovulation like stress, weight loss or weight gain, medication etc. Do you mean 24 days from period to period? This is a very short menstrual cycle which may explain why you aren’t falling pregnant. If you are in melbourne you should come to my class this weekend!

Hi, thanks for your helpful tutorial. I’m 42 and trying for my 2nd bubba. I have had a cone biopsy before my last bub and struggled to fall pregnant so did IUI and with success on the first go on Day 16 of a normal 28 day cycle. Now, my cycle is between 25 and 27 days and my scans are showing that I have ready to go folicalles at day 9 and 10. I’ve had ovulation injections and IUI twice on Day 11 and then the following month on day 12. without success I can never tell when I ovulate other than the pee sticks! Why after all these years is my straight forward 28 day cycle changed and do you think I have a hormonal imbalance? Thanks

I have had scan’s, blood tests and everything is normal. The doctors say its stress but i think this is a lame excuse. I don’t understand what is going on. Can u help.

I have been trying for a baby for several months with no luck. I have 3 daughters aged 4,5 and 8years. I have been using ovulation kits that say I’m ovulating around day 16 but this month 2 days after my period finished I had the clear stretchy discharge, I haven’t started using the opk yet but his month but does that mean I have already ovulated? I would love to concieve a healthy baby boy but obviously healthy means the most to me. I was told to try to concieve close to ovulation to up the odd of trying to have a boy. Now I have had this stretchy discharge I don’t no wether I have already ovulated or to take notice of the opk? I have been using the kits for several moths with no luck??

    Many thanks in advance

Hello. Nat! Thanks for this eye opening piece. However, my question is ths…My husband and I are trying. Conceive, and wanting a particular gender for that matter and since now I’ve just discoured my ovulation is the 15th day is it safe to continue to have sex 2 days prior and the D-day or do we just have it ONCE( as some articles put it) when we see the most cervical mucus and or BBT is high. Please advice!

    • July 24, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:38 am

It’s not 100% certain but it is considered for a girl, sex is pre ovulation and a boy post.

  • July 23, 2013 By Lisa 1:30 pm

Hi Nat, so just to be clear…in general if all is healthy, a woman can get pregnant on the few days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation? So according to your chart the days to become pregnant are 13, 14, and 15?

This is assuming the person is experiencing a healthy, regular cycle.

    Thank you!

    • July 24, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:37 am

A woman is considered fertile for 3 days post ovulation. So day of ovulation and then 3 days after. Depending on what your mucus looks like prior to ovulation (ie how many days it is there). I talk about all this in my classes. x

Hi Nat, I’m turning 43 this sept and I have 2 beautiful children already but hubby and I would like just one more. We have been trying for 6 months now. My cycle is about 26 days and the first 2 days start off with a small amount of dark brown discharge and then day 3 &4 is heavy flow then days 5 &6 back to dark brown again.

Mh kids are 3 &5 and took us 4-5 months to conceive and both great no problem pregnancies. I’m thinking my age is a big factor I’m fit and healthy and train 4-5 times a week. What are your thoughts , should I see someone ?

    • July 24, 2013 By mnfadmin 8:21 am

There are so many factors that may contribute – it’s so hard for me to say without seeing you. Whilst age is something on our minds, it isn’t necessarily as big of a factor as we may have been led to believe. Remember fertility is constantly changing – we can influence it in many ways. Perhaps if you are keen to dive into this further we could do an online consult. I hope this helps!

    Hi Nat,

Thanks for the great article. My partner and I are trying to conceive but its hard for me to know when I’m ovulating because I have constant clear non-smelling CM throughout the entire month every month. I’m never dry. Is this normal?

    Audrey

You need my ovulation event! Not abnormal – there’s ways to tell – perhaps you should try and come to one of my debunking ovulation events.

  • August 1, 2013 By Vanessa 12:01 pm

Hi there! I watched your video on ovulation and also read the above post, both were very good! I have a 3 year old and my husband and I just started trying for baby #2. With my son we weren’t trying, just not preventing and got very lucky and got pregnant the first try. This time I’ve decided to actually make an effort but am a bit confused… I have normal 31 day cycles, period is 5 days, starts heavy and slowly weans down. Yesterday and the day before I had EWCM, last night my husband and I had intercourse and today I’m very dry. My question is, how close to ovulation do you need to have intercourse? Could we have just made it in time this month? I just want to be able to plan for next month if we missed this time. Any information you can share so we’re prepared for next cycle would be greatly appreciated!

    • August 6, 2013 By mnfadmin 6:52 am

Whenever you see EWCM your body is trying to ovulate so sex at this time is obviously important but I say to count 3 days post ovulation to cover your fertile window. So yes – looks like you may have made it! You’ll love my Ovulation event that I’m currently touring with.

I have a question regarding EWCM. I don’t seem to produce any or only a teeny tiny bit (and that’s when actively searching for it). My acupuncturist has said I have a lot of “dampness” in my body. Could this be related? How can I improve EWCM apart from taking evening primrose oil, which I’m already doing? Thanks so much.

    • August 17, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:38 am

Green tea! Remember it isn’t how much you see, it’s what you feel. Fertile Mucus will always feel wet and cold similar to when you period arrives (although that generally feels wet and warm ‘down there.’)

I’m 12 & ive had my period since I was 11. My period isn’t at all like the chart on ‘day 1’ it’s heavy and there’s heaps of pain same on day 2-3 then it starts to get better but on day 7-8 it stops for 0.5-1 day and than comes back again for 1-1.5 days then the mucus doesn’t come till around day 20 or later and from day 23-day28 I get really bad pain. Is something wrong I know my auntie and possible sister have (I think ) something like ther uterus is the wrong way causing pain I’m worried if anythings wrong?

    • August 17, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:33 am

It would be a great idea to do an online consultation to better assist you. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong but your body may need some support.

    • August 16, 2013 By LJW 7:10 am

Hi Nat, I came of the pill after 14 years 18 months ago because TTC. Periods seemed normal straight away and they have always been very regular and predictable since I was 12, I’m now 31. Just in the last 6 months or so, my periods have been very light but lasting about a week (not enough to use tampons/pads etc), with,at most 2-3 days in the middle with normal flow. I had been having obvious EWCM and a surge in libido each month so was confident I was ovulating but now it has stopped.I have been using ovulation test kit this month and no luck so far but am only on day 11. Period was 4 days late one month but then came and last month I was convinced I was pregnant as unexplained fatigue, nausea, heightened sense of smell etc but then period came but a couple of days light then a few normal and then a few light with coloured discharge at the end. We had a spell of about 1 year within this 18month period where we were not TTC. Suggestions as to what could be going on welcome!

      • August 17, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:30 am

LJW – I need so much more information to better guide you. Perhaps an online consultation would be best here. x

Hi I noticed you mentioned having a day of brown blood, my period consists of about 2 heavier days but only needing to chang pad 2-3 times daily & then i have a day where i bleed almost nothing but of what blood i do see its really BROWN. then my period begins again the next day totally about 6-7 days then i have brown discharge for almost 2 weeks, in fact when im ovulating the brown bloody discharge has just stopped but can turn my discharge a tannish color still! i have endometriosis and didnt know if this is a hormone deffinciencey and wondered if that is what its from? (the abnormal bleeding) i have no fibroids or cysts. i have been trying to concieve 8 years and 2 months ago had a blighted ovum. I started taking maca and bee propolis 4 months before conceiving with my blighted ovum. any suggestions, or advice is great!!!! also, i experience sore boobs after ovulation which is typically day 17 of my cycle (31 day cycle) and the month i conceived the were also sore but i am not experiencing any sore boobs and ovulated a week ago just wondering what might cause this! thank you ! !

ok- have been trying to conceive now for 3 months. Already have 2 boys and didnt have any problems conceiving so am puzzled.

My cycle before last was 28 days and last months was 25 days. This month i have been using clear blue ovulation test sticks and as of yet (day 14) have not had a LH surge??

Any ideas? I have howerver had the ‘wet’ days and my hubby and i have been fully active throughout.

I just dont know the answer or whether im being impatient! 🙂

    Many thanks in advance

    • August 18, 2013 By mnfadmin 9:58 pm

Yes – because we can ovulate much later than we would assume – stress will delay ovulation as will diet and lifestyle changes, weight loss, exercise etc. I’d say you’re just ovulating later than you think.

      • August 19, 2013 By laura 3:39 am

so ill be day 19 tomo- ill test in the morning too. I still have lower abdo on palpation- bloating and a ‘wet’ feeling almost butterfly too.

Im not stressed, just puzzled. Ive been the same weight since the baby weight loss of my last son and nothing is different.

I guess we will just have fun every day until i think to do a pregnancy test early sept or get my period!?

        Many thanks

Hi there. I have PCOS and I have found it very hard to pinpoint exactly when I ovulate. It took me almost three years to conceive and now as I want a second baby the battle starts all over again. I have very erratic cycles lasting from anywhere between 35-50 days, sometimes even more. It’s a different story every month and I have tried to keep a track but to no avail. Can you please help me figure out my body so that I can look towards conceiving and having another baby. Thank you

    Hi Nat,

Trying for baby no 2. Since having my baby I now get quite painful cramping and bloating around half way through my cycle. I never had this before?

I have a 29-30 day cycle, period was 3rd of month then first noticed ewcm on day 13 so had intercourse days 13, 15 & 16. I then got cramping days 17,18 & 19 but ewcm finished on day 18. My question is have I missed the boat, should I have kept trying? Was the cramping ovulation? But why do I not have ewcm anymore but still feel cramps?

If you have any advice on this would really appreciate it, thank you

    • August 22, 2013 By mnfadmin 7:41 am

This sounds like oestrogen dominance although without seeing you it is really hard for me to say exactly. This is a key sign – the ovulation pain. The last day of EWCM is ovulation. Absolutely you should always keep trying and don’t fall into the trap of only having sex when you think you’re ovulating. All month round is key. x

      • August 22, 2013 By Lisa 10:29 am

Thanks very much for your reply. What is oestrogen dominance? Is that bad? Thanks again

Great article, ive spent hours reading articles on the Internet over the past 6 months of TTC. Ive been having regular 44 day cycles but cannot seem to pin point ovulation using both digital and normal opk. Ive had 6 days of high fertility but no peak and constant mild cramps throughout my cycle. Also, little EWCM on week 3 but no EW since yet still not dry and now on week 5! Bloods are all normal so no insight there. Fertility has been a lot more confusing than I ever imagined. Any tips or advice you have would be hugely appreciated

  • October 2, 2013 By Manza 8:59 pm

Hi Nat. We have just started ttc after almost 3 years with the mirena coil in. We have 2 healthy children but I am now almost 40 and worried a bit about my ovulation cycle. This month I ovulated on day 9 and last month I ovulated on day 15. The previous month I also ovulated on day 9 and was convinced I was pregnant and had a miscarriage even though the test I did was negative. My period was 3 days late and I usually have a very regular 28 day cycle. I also had many early pregnancy symptoms. I’m now concerned there is something wrong hormonally if I’m ovulating on day 9 again this month. I don’t know if I’m pregnant yet as I’m not due to get my period until the 16th October. What do you think and what can be done to help with early ovulation? Many thanks.

  • October 3, 2013 By Bekki 6:44 am

Hi, thanks for the explanation. I get really turned on right before I start my period. I also got implantation bleeding quite a long time after I’d have expected to and a positive test even later. Might it be that I ovulate late? I looked up the whole “getting turned on right before I start my period” thing a few months ago but couldn’t find anything out – but it did make me wonder if maybe my fertility is all topsy-turvy.

It could of course be Misattribution of Arousal (literally!), ie I feel a bit more wet and attribute it to being turned on and thus get more turned on. Who knows?

If you have any info on this or links to any studies it’d be great to have it.

    Many thanks!

Hello I was wondering if you could help me with my problem. ill try to explain this the best I can. So a few weeks ago I started having pregnancy symptoms, almost all of them in the book. I wasn’t trying, but also wasn’t not trying. I have never had sore breasts before not once, so I was a little alarmed at first by that symptom. and after a week or so I had almost every symptom in the book minus the spotting or bleeding. I haven’t had a period since September 20th 2013. today is now the 13th of november 2013. Ive tested negative continuously so started to give up on the idea but still carrying all the symptoms. Than The sunday of last week the 3rd, I was going to the restroom before intercourse and noticed a huge blob of clear sticky cm on the toilet paper, I have never seen that before, it was such a large amount, it looked almost like I blew my nose but perfectly clear with a little dot of red in it. it was thick and sticky, it grossed me out to say the least. So then after I cleaned up I had intercourse, my fiancé said I smelled bitter down there and I was sticky. during intercourse it almost hurt, I was really sensitive and it felt like he was hitting the back of me (cervix?) we finished and I thought nothing of it till the middle of the week, I thought maybe my symptoms the few weeks before were my body naturally ovulating for the first time and that’s why my symptoms were so clearly stated on every website, and when that blob of cm came out it was my most fertile day and the mucus plug was what I found. So im thinking I conceived on the 3rd. Is that possible that is what happened? I still tested negative since but it has only been 10DPO so im thinking its too soon since I usually only have a period once every three months because of my pills. Please help ive been going nuts. I don’t think my breasts could still be this sore after three 1/2 weeks if I wasn’t pregnant, as well with all the other symptoms.

I have irregular periods does that mean I don’t ovulate? I will have my period sometimes for 3 days and sometimes for one day and every month is is not the same days I do the ovulation kit but I only have been positive once the last 2 months I always get a negative result am I doing the test wrong or am I just not ovulating? This is so frustrating because my doctor told me I was fine

Hi I have an average 28 day cycle but I ovulate at different times, my period usually goes for 7 days. First few days are quite heavy then the next couple of days are light then the last day or two is basically spotting. I’ve had an ovulation test before and I’ve ovulated 5 days before my next period, sometimes it’s 11 days before and it changes! I’ve had a hormone test done by my GP and apparently all was normal.. What could be causing this, is this normal? And what would help regulate my ovulation times?

    Hi,

Today im so confused. So heres the story Im usually quite late in ovulating say day 21 as my cycle was usually between day 32 and day 36 . I was put on a three months progesterone cyglogest with the direction of taking them between day 14- 21 and im on my second month of progesterone. I this month decided to use ovulation test strips from day 9 up to day 16 , got a positive test on day 16 so my partner and I said brilliant this month we actually were right on time if you know what I mean and I was getting so excited. just in case I also did a test day 18 and Day 20 and they came up negative so I said to myself may be day 16 , 17 was my fertile time.

Then today I had alillte bleed , feeling like my period even though Im realistically not due to have my period day 29 whats the reason. Im so upset and now completely confused as to my cycle length. Maybe you could offer me some advice.

  • November 25, 2013 By jemshay 10:01 am

I saw my period on the 21st October and the 4th of November. This could have been cause I stop the birth control 6 days after I started as am trying to conceive. I had sex every day during my ovulation days 16th to 23rd. I had an ultra sound on the 21st no signs of pregnancy. Did I tested too early. Can fertilization could have gone unnoticed. Am having mild lower cramps.

As there any chance I can be pregnant.

Is this still relevant to someone with a copper IUD?

I have 3 children, used exclusive breastfeeding as contraception between children and only used the combined pill as a teen before the kids were born. The IUD was the winner of very long deliberations with my husband and won out over vasectomy.

I have had it in for less than 6mnths now. I have 7-8wk cycles with several isolated days of dark spotting between. Moontime is painful and I get moody which is not like me and also I have skin problems much the same as I have had in the early weeks of pregnancy and after weaning my children.

I feel like my only option is natural birth control!

Hi! My boyfriend has not ejaculated in me, but there is a possibility pre-cum could have been released. I had my period about two weeks ago. It was a day shorter than normal, but the flow was the same. I haven’t felt that great, so I decided to take a few pregnancy tests. (I’m a bit of a worry wart.) I took 6 tests, and they all came back negative. I still do not feel at peace, so I decided to get an ovulation kit. Today was the day I was supposed to ovulate, and it says I have low fertility. Am I stressing myself out so much that ovulation is delayed? Or could I possibly be pregnant?

Hi, I have a question…I normally have a pretty regular 28 day cycle only this month at around ovulation time I travelled to australia…I didn’t take my period and it is now 6 days late…negative HPT…we want to start trying for a baby again…do you know when i would be likely to ovulate again and what has happened this month? Could it be because of the travelling? And does it mean my ovulation was delayed or did I ovulate but no period?? Thanks for your help 🙂

I need to know if I need a regular menstrual cycle to know when I am ovulating, I am 34 years old. My fiance and I are trying to have a baby and I am wondering, since my menstrual cycle is not normal. Some months I get it late in the month like around the 20th or later. Other months I get it like last month on the 15th. When I wipe my self I always check to see if it’s clear mucus or milky.

I know that if it’s clear I am ovulating and if it’s milky I am not. My main concern is I don’t know my cycle length. Sometimes I have even had months where I have had in on the 22nd or even the 28th for like 2 or 3 months straight. But like I said last month I got my period on the 15th. The month before that on the 18th. How do I find out my cycle length and when I am ovulating.

First you should know, I am NOT trying to get pregnant. My boyfriend and I have been having protected sex, but sometimes unprotected, just for maybe like 2 minutes and then puts a condom on. I last had my period on 11/26/13 and my next period should be around 12/24/13. On Saturday 12/7/13 I started feeling a little wet but didn’t think anything of it. Then the next day, I spotted I think. Dark brown discharge. It totally caught me off gaurd. Now today 12/10/13 the spotting is decreasing a little, but I woke up this morning very wet. And (sorry for TMI) there was a whiteish boogery substance. Am I pregnant or am I just ovulating? I’ve never spotted before and I’m freaking out. I’ve head that stress and weightloss can cause this, and I’ve had a very stressful week last week and I’ve also been losing weight. I am also on birth control. I’ve been feeling normal, not moody or crampy, or dizzy but just stressed from this situation. Please help! Thank you

I have been off this pill since feb 2013. This month my period started on the 4th and I started the pill I kept bleeding so I stopped it and the bleeding stopped the next day (which if I hadn’t taken the pill and it had extended my period would have been my first fertile day) today I am experiencing headaches and Lots of discharge which is creamy but odourless. Along with stretchy white discharge. I have had unprotected sex this month.

My question is am I ovulating ?

    Hello Nat!

So, I guess I’ll just dive right into my question… I got my period December 3 2013 ( first one since august of 2012 when I ended BC pills). I noticed clear and stretchy cervical mucus three weeks after Dec. 3 (period). I should’ve expected my period on Dec 31st. But no period and no discharge. I have irregular periods and have been ttc since Oct 2012… Just wondering what’s up.

    Thanks, Tiffany

Me and my partner have been trying to conceive for a while now. 8 out of 12 months my period is normal. Every 29 30 days. Then out of nowhere its early and sometimes late then bavk to 29 30 days. I thought since I have periods that meant you were fertile. So we started calculating my period and ovulation. Still no baby! Unfortunately I don’t have health insurance so I can’t just go get help. Anything affordable is my biggest question.

Hi there.. I would like to know the following. I have noticed that eaxh month my period would be either on day 24 one month and day 19 the next month, then day 26 the following.I used to get heavy cramps when I was younger I am 33 now and my periods are not heavy in terms of cramps anymore. The colour is normally a darkish pink red and it last from 2 to 3 days. The first two days the flow is heavy and the last day its minimal.by day four my flow is done.

I do get pains in my lower back before I get my period and I get bloated with breast tenderness normally a week or two before my period.

I want to know is there sumthing wrong with me.

    Hi Nat,

I started my period 9 days ago and it was 5 days long. I shouldn’t ovulate for a few more days. I took an ovulation test and it was low fertility, which makes sense. However yesterday I had thick CM and today it is very slippery and wet (and a lot of it) From everything I’ve read, it seems I’m ovulating despite the test. My regular cycle is 28 to 30 days. Any help would be great!

    Thanks!

  • January 19, 2014 By Mona Harris 6:41 pm

Hello I have read and fully understand your information about ovulation that you have released. But am I 100% confident that I can conceive? No the reason why is because now that I have read your information and have notice that I have experienced all those signs before. I can only remember in my 24 yours of living that’s only happened twice. I have gotten pregnant before that was three years ago. Do to a private situation I don’t have a living child. Six months after my situation I had a serious surgery where I had to get my left Fallopian tube and my left ovary removed. So as of now I only have my right ovary and my right Fallopian tube. It’s been two in a half years since that has happened. I haven’t been concerned or keep track with my period or ovulation because I wasn’t trying to conceive. So I don’t know if it’s been how it is now since my surgery. Now that you have read my life situation here comes the questions.

Can I get pregnant with one tube and one ovary

My period comes every month and stays for five days, my bleeding seems normal, but it changes up every other month. Example, my period will come every 24 days and then another month come every 27 days, and then another month come ever 29 days.

So how would I know my fertility days to get pregnant if I don’t know when my next period will be, so I can count back to the period I just to find out my days to conceive. So what does that really mean? And what can I do about it? I really want a child of my own and I just don’t know what else to do. I have been going through this for months now and I don’t want to keep thinking about something that maybe couldn’t happen for me. I think if I just know if I can or can’t I would let it go. Please comment back with the answers answer back my questions. Thank You

I rarely ovulate because I rarely have periods but I get random positive ovulation tests but no period to follow it. I started taking evening primrose oil on the 20th December 2013 and I got my first period in 6 months on the 23rd December which was great! Then I got a positive ovulation test on cycle day 19 but I noticed my temperature hadn’t changed at all I had no dip in temperature or rise after my positive ovulation test. I am completely clueless. I am due my period tomorrow if I did actually ovulate and I’ve had a few positive pregnancy tests but the lines have not been getting darker they’ve actually been getting lighter. Is there anything I can do to make myself have regular periods so I can get pregnant?

Hi Nat! I just stumbled upon your site and LOVE it! I read through all the posts (questions) and your responses… But nothing really fit my situation. :/

In November of 2013 I had a tubal reversal. The doctor could only repair my right tube… So I have less to work with. Before my surgery I religiously saw EWCM… But since the surgery I haven’t. However, I am using OPK’s and they have been positive. For example, this month I had a positive from Saturday, January 25th (2pm) – January 26th (8pm)’ and I’ve been having pains on my lower right side (woohoo)! My husband and I bd’d on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday… But unfortunately he left for training this afternoon (Army). Could I still be fertile without seeing the EWCM??? A lot of what I read says “no.” I have a 30 cycle (avg) with a 5 day period. Thanks for taking the time to read my “story.”

    Sincerely,

    MLM

DH and I have been TTC for 4 months with no success. I am 29 and DH is 21, so I doubt age is a factor. I am unable to determine when I ovulated or if I even have. My period lasted 9 days and I was continuously wet right after that. DH and I have BD’d every day since my period ended. Today, I noticed some EWCM when we BD’d today. Is it possible that I have ovulated today or did I ovulate before that? I have a normal 27 day cycle, but this is the first time that my period lasted 9 days. Hi there

What does the purple chart mean? I don’t really understand. My cycle is 33 days. I usually ovalate on the 18th day or 19th day. But I only experience on the 17th or 18th day the mukes. Which is sticky and wet. But not your chart… So is that the days I actually ovalate ?

Hi Nat, thanks for this article! I was breastfeeding my boy all along (he’s now 19mths) & my period returned on 23 Dec (first time my period came back). However, there wasn’t any period the whole of January. Is it normal, i.e. my period hasn’t gone back to it’s regular schedule? How do I know which is my ovulation day if there is no period?

    • February 3, 2014 By mnfadmin 3:00 pm

Hey Michelle – this is very normal whilst breastfeeding. It may take some time as your body adjusts. It’s nothing to worry about if it is sporadic whilst nursing.

dear Nat I love the whole approach of treat the cause not the symptom. I live in South Africa and we have very little Natural Fertility experts (most ObGyn do the BCp or clomid thing).

I have PCOS and cycles vary 35-39 days. Now on eaither CD 42 or CD 17 (Had bright red blood on CD24 and CD26, don’t thing it was a period). I had Egg white mucus yesterday and today. I use Vitex and Pregnacare conception.

Which other treatments or therapies do you suggest for PCOS. I concieved my DS after ovarian drilling but thought this time we’ll try the natural approach.

Ovulation will vary month to month, it’s unlikely to be the exactly same day of the cycle every time because it is influenced by so many things. I think you’d really benefit from watching my Debunking Ovulation mini ecourse. http://www.debunkingovulation.com

I use fertility friend to chart my cycles. I normally ovulate between cd18-20. This month i has positive opks cd 14-15 (all opks since have been very negative) egg white, and watery/slippery cm a week prior to the positive opk Sticky/dry cm cd 16-17 and a brief moment (more like one glob) of egg white cd18 then back to sticky cd20. The problem I’m having is my bbt rose .6 degrees on cd20 which puts ovulation at cd 19, but that was 4 days after a positive opk and very lubricative cm. So do I go with cm as ovulation indicator this month or bbt?

    • February 15, 2014 By mnfadmin 8:59 am

CM is never wrong. Temps can be very grey. They are ok as a guide but CM will always show you ovulation.

    Hi,

I’ve been off the pill for about 5 months, but actively trying for about 4. I have had regular periods but they have varied slightly in length (longest was 33 days).

This month I have been testing regularly for ovulation using strips, but I haven’t had any positive readings this month. I’m now at day 19 and feeling crampy and have had skin breakouts and feel like I’m getting my period but it is way too early. I did an ovulation strip and there was a feint line. Is it possible I could be ovulating really late? I feel like I’m still trying to get a grap on what’s going on in my body since going off the pill.

    Please help…

  • February 20, 2014 By Nicola 3:41 pm

Is it possible to never ovulate but have periods??? I’ve tried ovulation strips twice now over a Severn day cycle and the strips haven’t changed colour. My husband and I have been trying over two years now I will be 38 in July he is 50. I feel at a loss with my Doctors they’re very incompetent, I have to chase everything up and they fail to give me certain instruction which I end up having to find out myself making the process take longer. They have also recently informed me should I have to go down the IVF route I will have to pay for it as my husband has a son with his X wife, his son is 19 year old man that has his own house and in full time work I don’t understand why I’m getting scrutinized for marry someone who was separated two years from his x wife before I ever met my husband. All this is really stressing me out and I find it hard to focus on anything, when I think about my situation and the lack of support I get I just can’t stop crying. My husband doesn’t know what it’s like for me, everyone around me has baby’s or are having baby’s I feel like I’m being punished for not having them earlier. I had an eptopic pregnancie when I was 20 I know one to this day has ever explained to me what that entailed when I was put to sleep and the egg was removed, sorry for ranting I’m do depressed xx

  • February 20, 2014 By Nicola 3:54 pm

P.S I have never been on the pill so thought I would get pregnant really quick… Two years on no baby, what tests could I have to see if I’m ovulating? From reading your notes I already no I’m not pregnant this month as my breasts on the outter part of them feel really bruised like I’ve done a few round in the ring with Mike Tyson punching them, I can barely touch them they’re so painful. On the first day of my period I have to stay in as I’m in too much pain and lose so much blood I’m constantly changing my tampax whilst taking pain killers. It’s only started like this over the past year, before I never had a clue when my periods were going to come I never kept track, but they never lasted long and I certainly never had any pain with them. I did when I first started aged 11, but buy the time I was 13 I was fine xxx

“This can last for several days until you begin to feel signs of optimal fertility – clear and stretchy cervical mucus – remember it feels wet and cold. Cervical mucus is essential for CONTRACEPTION. It is the sperm’s mode of transport up to the eagerly waiting egg. ”

Contraception prevents pregnancy. This paragraph argues that cervical mucus enables pregnancy. This is a fairly large contradiction and could easily confuse readers who are actually depending on this article to make important decisions about their bodies and their sexual and reproductive health. One would expect that a fertility expert would be comfortable enough with the terminology to know the proper use of the word “contraception”.

    • March 2, 2014 By mnfadmin 8:47 pm

Oh I see what you’re saying! It really depends on how you see it – it can be seen as needing awareness around contraception if you are using this method to prevent pregnancy or equally awareness for conception. Cervical mucus awareness goes both ways 🙂 But thank you for making me aware of this – I’ve changed it to conception in hope that it reads better but I’m glad you got my drift either way.

  • March 3, 2014 By Kari 6:26 am

I seem to ovulate on day 8 or 9, I was reading that it could be a problem, the reason why I think I ovulate early is because I had a lot of stretchy mucus on day Feb 8th, I had started my period on January 31st, it was a short period lasted 3 days, which is short for me, usually last 5 days, so I wasn’t sure if that was why I ovulated early…. I took an advanced clearblue ovuation test on day 10 showed flashing smiley face, and continued to show flashing smiley face until I ran out for 10 days… so I was a little confused about that… so I guess my luteal phase would be longer than it should be, I just don’t know if its something I should have checked out ? We have only been trying for two months now, so not that long

my question regards returning to ovulation while nursing. I was always very irregular but since having my daughter 5 years ago, things have seemed to become more regular but i had my period only once between my first daughter, second son and third daughter. my youngest is almost 15 months and still nursing but last month i noticed the cfm and was pretty certain i ovluated (had a little spotting which i thought might have been implantation bleeding but then got my period about a week later). This month however i have seen very little cfm and have felt mostly dry. is it possible to ovulate and then return to being anovulatory while breastfeeding. my daughter does still breastfeed fairly often (between 5 and 6 times). thanks for any info you can give.

I need advice !/: I’m 24 yrs old, have a soon to be 7 year old in May . He was my first pregnancy . Next month (April) it’ll be year that me n my bf have been trying for Bby #2 but we ended up conceiving in aug and took a pregnancy test sept 11th, went to the dr 5 days later and was given the same due date as my son may 16th. Seems like I conceived both pregnancies in the same month around the same day. But few days later sept 19th I miscarried . And both pregnancy dates of first day of last menstrual cycle was August 9th which gave me due dates of May 16th. Is it a coincidence that it’s the same dates or am I just more fertile in august? And if it’s going to be a yr of trying to conceive and only managed to achieve one pregnancy that ended in miscarriage, do I go to the dr and get checked????? Me n my bf have sex at least 3 times a week . I don’t have any physical problems , neither does my bf. I’m healthy but I’m wondering if it my reproductive system or his? I’m just stuck thinking:/

    • March 5, 2014 By Missy 6:02 am

Also, my period usually last 4/6 days. It’s usually kinda heavy first day but I basically only need one pad a day. I don’t bleed too much. And my cycle varies sometimes

      Sept 19 – oct 16. 2013 (miscarried sept 19th ) 27 days

      Oct 16- nov 16. 2013 31 days

      Nov 16- dec 15 2013. 29 days

      Dec 15-jan 20 2014. 36 days

      Jan 20 -feb 20 2014. 31 days

And I’m currently on day 13 & according to opk I took yesterday I’m ovulating . I feel my ovulation pains , sometimes more than some months

  • March 14, 2014 By Lor 8:22 am

Hi, I have a different one for you! So I was 13 weeks pregnant when miscarriage began 05.02.14 Had a natural miscarriage over 10-12 days only to find out there was still remains. So had a Suction curettage on 19.02.14 and then bled a further week (very lightly). Thought I was done cause it all dried up and then on 1st march started what seemed like a very light period( 3 days only)I’m thinking this was a light period due to the fact that the curettage probably cleaned most of it out. I do remember what I wondered was an ovulation pain – just a few days before the curettage.

Anyways, with this said…. We thought we’d try again. So… Have been doing OPK’s and I get no positive really. It’s always a positive bit not darker than test line. All that aside. If I just went in CM I had all the right stuff going on. There was runny, then wet and there was stretchy wet. All this happened from the 09.03.14 till the 13.03.14. Now I have a little CM but it is thicker and not as wet. We did the deed every night this week … Due to ovulation a little earlier than day 14 do you think we did it enough? Also does it sound like my body has just stayed on track through all this turmoil? Lastly I get gestational collestasis every time. Do you know of a preventitive I can do to hope and pray against it. It is awful and such a risk of still birth … Very scary but worth it in te end God willing 🙂

    Hi,

I have just come back from the doctors this morning from discussing moving on from the pill. That was a very wasted morning as my G.P. was so unhelpful and clearly did not want to break down options. I struggle with my cycles as they are so irregular so reading this post has been amazing and has made me feel like their are other people out there which do have the issue’s I have.

    So thank you.

    Hello,

First off I’d like to say Thank you for your time! 🙂 My Husband & I have 3 Children together, ages 8, 3, and 2. I will be 30 soon, and He is 42. We are trying for Our fourth now before We are “too old” lol! I don’t really want to try after I turn 30. I have been trying to conceive for what will now be the 4th Month. It seemed like I was Always Pregnant when I wasn’t trying lol, but since I’ve actually been keeping track of My Cycles it’s felt impossible! I’ve been tracking them since August, and they have been pretty regular up until the last 2 months. In Feb My period came 2 Days early, and then last month it was a Day late. This Next month if I’m not Pregnant ( 🙁 ) it should be here on April 6th, but here’s the thing, I was given an estimated Ovulation Date of March 23rd, so right now I should be 5DPO, but TODAY is the First and ONLY Day during this cycle that I experienced Fertile Cervical Mucus, so We had sex today just in case. Should I expect that I will Ovulate late this Month, and to start My period later than the 6th of April if I’m not Pregnant? I’ve been having sex since Two Days before My Fertile Days began, so from approx. March 17th-March 23rd (Predicted Ovulation Date), then again on March 25th, and Again today when I noticed the Fertile Mucus (March 28th), do you think I built up enough of an Army incase I do Ovulate late this Month, should I still be Good (lol)??? I Really look forward to Hearing from you!

    Thanks Again! 🙂

Thank you. This has been very informative. I used to suffer from irregular periods until my doctor pit me on yaz. Now my periods are normal and I have recently taken clomid as per my doctors instruction. According to my cycle chart I am fertile(wet) until Monday then ovulation will take Place on Wednesday. As these r my most fertile days, I have a brownish wet discharge but it doesn’t smell. Is this normal & would it affect my chances of conceiving? I have even been tempted to douche with warm water only. Is that wise?

    Thank you.

hi, and thankyou for the useful information was very helpful.. Im 24 and my cycles have been out of whack with my last two, the first one coming after 7 weeks then just recently 6 weeks.. And now just 6 days after my recent period I spotted red when i wiped but only as i wiped 1-3 times until it became clear at the toilet visit then no more after that at all. Then the next day after i was exercising my bf noticed that it looked like i had wet my pants so i went to check and i just had a watery odorless discharge not stringy just water like.. I do stress a fair bit which i think causes hormonal imbalance but i have been check for pcos in the past and came back negative. So wondering if there was a possibility that was a sign for ovulation or something else worth getting checked out. Also me and my bf have been trying for roughly 8 months now. Im not looking for a definite diagnosis, just a view thanks.

Hi Nat, thanks for the fantastic article!

I’m 32 and ttc. My ovulation varies from 1-3 days each month but lp is always 14-15 days. My cycle comes around the 30-33 day but sometimes (rare) 29 or 34 day. Is this considered regular or do I need assistance?

My period is heavy on day 1, medium-light day2-3 then light/spotting day4-6. Sometimes day 7 I just get a beige dot. Is this again not normal? Based on your article it sounds like I need help?

I also get night sweats 1-2 days before my period comes since I was 30. I don’t get too much cm. would really like to see what you think and if it sounds like I may need some help. Thanks 🙂

    Hi,

I was wondering if you could help. I thought I was ovulating early this month because i started to see EWCM on cycle day 8 but its now cycle day 15 and I still have it although now its more of a wet type that’s thinner than before. so the last couple of days has felt more like the wet and cold type of feeling. I haven’t really seen any EWCM for almost two years i think the last time i saw it was the month i conceived my first child. I was wondering if i am even ovulating in the first place? I’ve also been diagnosed with PCOS the week before i found out i was pregnant the first time so didn’t expect to ovulate anyway but I’d really like the chance to have another child I’ve had regular periods from December to march and then this last one came two days early on the 10th of April which was completely different to normal it was more heavy and I even had a bit of brown blood and a bit of what looked more orangy than red at times so I really don’t know whats going on it lasted five days but it was on and off from day 3.

Anything you can tell me will be a huge help.

    Thanks.

    Regards Nicole.

Hello there, thank u so much. This has been really informative.

    One question though,

I normally have a 35 day cycle with ovulation on day 21 or 20. And a period of 7 days plus 1 day dark brown spotting. Last cycle was my first month ttc. My period came on day 30 which is early for me. It started with slimy brown discharge and 2 hours later period started. Was shorter and lighter than normal and ended on day 5 then later on day 8 some more brown spotting with creamy discharge.

Hpts and blood test all negative.. So started charting bbt this month and my temp is 35.7 today on day 21 and for the first time ever no ewcm just a slight wet feeling. so i have no idea why i havent ovulated yet!! If im going to!

Please help im still ttc and am trying to cover all my basis but i dont know whats going on with my body.. I have always been able to tell when i ovulated but ever since ttc, my cycle is screwed 🙁

Been ttc for two months now after 3 miscarriages last year. Took contraceptives for two months before ttc now nothing is happening. Have sex daily but not sure if I ovulate. My period is taking 5 days now started light then heavy, no pain. How can I tell that I ovulated or ovulate?

  • May 15, 2014 By Darian 1:08 am

I was just wondering bc I can’t figure any of this out.. I ovulated last month and I had sex 2 of the days when I thought I was ovulating. My period this month was 6 days late and I am having light bleeding compared to normal. I had taken 3 test all negative which I knew tehy would be, I just wanted too. But anyways my question is if I wouldve got pregnant between the 22nd and 27th of April would it be effecting my period in may? I am just so confused. I feel like I’m pregnant it’s like I know but I feel like all odds are agenst me here.

  • May 15, 2014 By Rebecca 12:28 pm

Im really confused on trying to figure out when I ovulate. I NEVER have the egg white mucus so in between cycles we use preseed. I have one daughter from a different relationship so I know that I can get pregnant, I just cant figure out this ovulation. My cycles Vary from 25 days to 29 days every month. Around when would it make the most sense for me to ovulate? I will be buying a ovulation kit next cycle but just wanted expert opinion.

I am confused. I used to have ovulation pains every month. I would also have lots of EWCM. I had one child preterm in 2010. I had a miscarriage October of 2012. I had about 35 days until my cycle started after the miscarriage. I went about 6 months with a normal 28 day cycle (ovulation pain and EWCM present). Then I went to 34 days and dropped back to a 25 days cycle. This happened for about 3 months. I am back to a 29 day cycle again. But I no longer get ovulation pains or lots EWCM. I get maybe one day of stretchy about 2 days after my period and again maybe 5 days before my period. I noticed this month my cervix was low and very soft around cd18. Then lots of cm a few days later until my period. My periods last about 7 days heavy for the first day or two then lighter. Spotting about day 5-7. Some months I notice horrible bloating, dizziness, dry mouth, and tender nipples. Other months nothing. Could this be a hormonal imbalance or just changes in my cycle. I just turned 30 this year.

    Hi!
My fertility days were July 9-14, 2014. My ovulation day was July 12,2014. I had unported sex on those day. My period isn’t suppose to start until July 26th,2014 however today July 16, 2014 I have started spotting and cramping. Is it my period and does it mean I am not pregnant? Is it to early too take a pregnancy test?

Hi Nat! Firstly, thank you. Before I read your ‘Fertilise Yourself’ and watched your ‘Debunking Ovulation’ I wondered if there was anything more that could help me or anything more that I could do naturally. Im 34, and my husband (42) and I have been trying actively to conceive every month for 2.5 years. I have endometriosis (chocolate cyst on left ovary) for which I have had 2 laparoscopies. From what the doctors could see there was no blockage in my tubes and a small spot which they lasered in the last op (Oct 13) as well as draining the cyst. We have done all the blood/sperm tests which have come back healthy. We are healthy/active and live as naturally as possible. I have done a stint of acupuncture in the past but about to start weekly sessions again (I have sluggish liver chi). My naturopath has recently put me on Blackmores Celloids PPMP and SPPC and liquid Vitex (agnuscatus) daily along with a slew of other vitamins 🙂 I am about to start charting with my next cycle and I suspect I may be ‘damp’ as you have mentioned in the above post as I often have discharge throughout the month. My questions are: Can you comment more on endometriosis and fertility – is there more I should be doing? What should I do about dampness? Is there a branch of your clinic in Sydney? Thank you Nat 🙂

Hi , this is new to me . I’ve been off the pill for a year now and I know this sounds bad but I’ve not been on any contrception. . I do not want anything unnatural so this sounds perfect . The thing this how would this work if you have a husband away a lot ( just my luck the timing would be all out ). One other thing do help with learning this and working it all out ? I’m scared of getting it wrong but I really need to be doing this asap.
    Thanks

I’ve tried to get pregnant for 1yr nw but cant. My cycle is so iregular, sometimes i dnt have 4 upto 3 mnths until it is induced. When i press my breast water comes out, i was told its hormonal imbalance but av taken bromocriptine upto about 60 tab and stopped because i didn’t see any use. Last two months menses av been induced using clomid 100mg, i didn’t test but i’m not sure i ovulated. I had some pregnancy signs last month but it wasn’t it. I have stop taking drugs letting my body do its thing. but since eight days after my menses until today, ten days after menses i have more than enough watery yellowish but paplike discharge, its not stretchy at all. Still having water in my breast and i’m not sure i wil menstruate next month since i didn’t take clomid again. Whenever i hear people talk about low progesterone i have this feeling of that is your problem. Is there any over the counter drug i can take for this as i don’t have enough money to see a gnae. Please i need help

Nat, I recently had a baby (6 weeks ago). For the first 2 days of my baby’s life she was given nutrition through an IV and had very little formula and no breast milk. For 2 weeks afterwards, she had both breast milk and formula, now she is 100% breastfed.
I had not stopped bleeding postpartum, and 4 days ago I suspect I started my period (cramps followed with heavier bleeding). Why do you think I am having my period? Could it be from delaying breastfeeding my baby? My OB/GYN told me to watch for pain to see if it really is my period, or if it’s something worse that will need attention.
Also, I have been told to look into birth control and I read your posts on the pill, the copper IUD, and just paying attention to your body and I don’t like what was said about any of them. I was initially thinking about the copper IUD because my previous experiences with the pill and the ring lead to depression. If I chose any type of birth control, which would you recommend out of the Copper IUD, the patch, the bar in the arm, etc, keeping in mind that i want nothing passed onto my baby? If I chose to use the pull out method and paying attention to my body, how do I keep track of my ovulation if my periods aren’t really periods, or if they are irregular because of breastfeeding? Sorry about all the questions throughout the comment. Hope you can help answer them. BTW, I love all the information you have provided, thank you very much. 🙂

Hey I wondered if you could help me. This has never happened to be before. Last month Feb the 13th I started my period. Always regular 28 day cycle. However then on the 25th of that month I was shocked I was bleeding. It was just light and ppink and the next day got a bit heavier red like but still mostly pink. This lasted three days. Was just so strange as I had no cramping whatsoever. This has never happened to me before. Just wondered what this means for me. When I’d ovulate next and if my period would be from the 13th of Feb and not counting a month from the 25th. Sorry I’m just so confused. Please help.

Another thing is my breastmilk is suddenly little, iv had problems with it but have been drinking lots of tea but lately the tea is not helping
do u perhaps have an idea of what cud be wrong
Oh and its been two weeks now since I had my weird periods and I am really worried

    Hi there,
Is it possible to have fertile looking cervical mucus and show up Positive OPK tests and then not go on to ovulate? This is my first cycle after coming off BCP in November (so 3 months with no AF) I was positive I ovulated on Cycle day16 had fertile CM on CD15 and positive OPKS 2 days before as well. Although I have been charting my temp and my temp has now dropped bellow the cover line TWICE in 6 days following (which I assume means there’s a problem)

    Hi Nat,
Thanks so much for your informative post..I have a question: I have a cycle that ranges from 24-28 days..how do i know when i ovulate if i don’t know what my cycle will be for the month? I monitor my Cervical mucus all the time..This month the egg white mucus decreased on cycle day 12, does that mean i would have ovulated on cycle day 12 or 13? or later?..im so confused lol. My period tracker is advising i would have ovulated on cycle day 13 I also know that my luteal phase is 14.. i’m currently on cycle day 15. Could you please shed some light lol.
    Thanks so much again

    • April 19, 2015 By Nat Kringoudis 8:41 am

      Hi Noura,

Do you have my course Debunking Ovulation? The e-course is spread over 2 hours to help you know exactly when you ovulate each and every month. It will more than likely change from month to month. It will not necessarily be on the exact same day each cycle as our bodies are influenced by our diet, lifestyle, environment etc. I think you’d thoroughly benefit from checking it out – http://www.debunkingovulation.com x

      • April 19, 2015 By Noura 2:06 pm

        Hi Nat,
Thanks so much for your response. I don’t have your course as of yet but i will definitely be purchasing it soon. I just watched a youtube video of yours (healthtalks Natural Contraception & Ovulation) what an amazing video. I love how your extremely passionate at what you do. Your so coherent in the way you speak and in your explanations. There are not many Doctors out there that are just as passionate and caring as you are.
        God bless you honestly.
Looking forward to purchasing Debunking Ovulation.
        Thanks again

my cycle is has been between 24 and 27days and i feel my breast tender by the sides as from the cycle day12 plus ovulation cramps and EWCM. But this month i have not seen the EWCM, no breast tenderness at all but the ovulation test was positive on day 13 and 14 (very faint on day 15) did i really ovulate without the EWCM. I had to use preseed to baby dance…
should i be worried that ther was no EWCM and no breast tenderness???

Clomid will indeed induce ovulation but as soon as you stop, it’s more than likely so will ovulation. It takes time to get things on track indeed, but I would say something is still missing in the puzzle here – usually most patients will find once they are doing whats right for their body symptoms generally begin to diminish and evidence that the hormones are working again rise. Further it robs gut health just like the pill which is a big part of the issue – you can certainly try it but just understand the side effects too.

  • July 22, 2015 By Lucy 7:53 pm

Hello. Not sure if this post is still going, but here goes anyways.
My husband have been trying for our second child for 9 months and are having issue. (We were lucky a became pregnant with my daughter the first month). I believe I ovulate to late in the month. Normally it’s between day 20 & 22 of a 30 day cycle. I spoke with my doctor and she seemed to think it’s wasn’t an issue and that just need to have more sex. Not wanting over share, but I can confirm we cover that part well! We are both in good health, non smokers, drink only very little, no caffeine.
I have been taking vitamin B6 as I was told that could help with the late ov? I also take a vitamin that covers everything else.

Not sure what else we can try. Any help would be great

    Thank you Lucy

We have been TTC for about 9 months. I am 30, he is 32. Body size, diet, exercise, etc. are fine. I was on BC for 14 years prior to being off of BC for one full year before starting TTC. The first 7 months of being off of BC for the first time in my life, I did not have a period. Then, I had very strange and unpredictable cycles. However, for the last 9 months, I have had a standard/predictable period with a cycle length of 29-32 days. Most most we have sex everyday or every other day and have had no luck getting pregnant. Any advice, tips, suggestions, etc. are greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help in advance!

    Hi Nat,
hubby and i been ttc #2 for a year now with no luck, miscarried in april but was only 5/6 weeks along. Recently had a scan that showed uterus and ovaries/tubes to be all ok,but just dont know why were not getting pregnant. I track my ovulation days and thinkim gettin b it right and we have plenty of intercourse on the right days, everything seems to fit but were just not getting pregnant.
I still breastfeed my 22 month old but only a few minutes at his lunchtime nap and a few minutes at bed time. Could this be whats stopping things?
ive just turned 37 and hubby is 43 but we come from very fertile families!
i am getting very disheartened as gp has just brushed me off several times. Any advice for us?

  • September 19, 2015 By mrs mjk 11:55 pm

Sorry forgot to add that since having my 1st child my periods are no longer regular 28 day cycles, they range from 28 to 32 with no consistency and i ovulate therefore at different times each month. This month i was POSITIVE i was ovulating early as had all the symptoms, clear, very wet cm and period type aches from day 11 and one sharp stab that also caused an upper thigh cramp so i assumed i had definitely ovulated,so we made sure we had plenty of sex. I had a dry day or 2 and now day 16 of cycle i am very very wet again with more dull aches down below. Did I notnovulate before? Am I ovulating now? This keeps happening to me and i am very unsure what is going on. I have used predictor kits but i never get a positive. Ami not ovulating? Anyadvice would be greatlyappreciated.

It’s supposed to alternate, but this isn’t always a certain thing. You can generally feel the glands in your groin swell on one side or the other when ovulating that correspond to the ovary that is ovulating. x

I saw my menses 26th of January this year but there was no ovulation and flow during the month of February. The month of March,i ovulated and menstruated was on the 4th. I have been having severe breath tenderness and haven’t seen my menses yet and don’t know when to expect it. Should I be worried?

Hi, firstly thank you for such a great post. I realise this was a long time ago. I hope you still are active on this.
I am wondering if you have any suggestions for me.
I stopped bcp after 15 years July 2015. I had my typical ‘regular’ period for 5 cycles. Did not get a period in December and felt… Off.. Was eventually diagnosed with PCOS in January via u/s (40 cysts on right ovary 20 on left). My medical doctor is not much help. I’m 5’7 and weight 120ish lbs. With no excess hair growth. I have asked to be referred to an endocrinologist and gynocologist. While waiting for these appointments I have done my own research. I started taking vitamins (b, D, magnesium, zinc, omega) as well as ovositol (inositol complex) Vitex (took this only for 3 months) and maca. I ovulated last month and had a typical, though first day very heavy, period. I am tracking my temperature and it spiked today (cd9) I know it’s possible that it’s not ovulation and pcos can cause temperature spikes before ovulation and staying constantly elevated. I also had blood work cd2 fsh was 7 lh 14 (I know it should be 1:1 but not sure how that affects fertility) estrogen and testosterone levels were normal. So after all of that. My question is do you have any advice as to what I am taking if I should be taking anything different or instead of? Should I continue to take Vitex? I stopped because I ovulated. We are trying to conceive and I am unable to take hormones as I get ocular migraines. So naturally would be much preferred.
    Thanks for any insight.

This is the first cycle that I’ve known that I’ve ovulated and I’ve been sick to my stomach for 5 days now. Not throwing up or anything, just an aversion to food in general and an overly full feeling every time I eat. I think it’s phantom symptom or stress (I am the opposite of a stress eater). I have a lot going on other than TTC so I’m blaming that. Could i be pregnant?

    • July 23, 2016 By Nat Kringoudis 11:54 am

Hi Gabby, It’s super difficult for me to answer this question without knowing more but generally signs of pregnancy don’t really set in until about 6 weeks after your last period. I’d say perhaps your digestive health may need some support due to rapidly changing hormone levels. x

    Hi,

I would like to ask 6 months ago when I went to my doctor for some test regarding my ovary. The doctor told me to go back on my 14 days after my menstruation,She found out that I am capable to get pregnant anytime because she saw I have eggs on that time 14 days after menstruation. So meaning my ovulation is always 14 days even my cycle is 35 days?is that possible?

I started taking vitex to see if it would help with my heavy period and help me conceive this is my first month on it and now I’m on cycle day 24 out of a 32 day cycle with all negative opks. Can vitex make me ovulate late or not ovulate at all. My cycles are regular for the most part with a LP between 12 to 14 days now I think my cycle got messed up

  • March 20, 2017 By Jamie L Moody 10:38 am

I’m not sure if I have a normal period or not its hard for me to tell. There are months that they come around same time. Then there are the ones I have had recently. On Dec. 2016 through January 2017 I had a 30 day cycle. January to Feb. I had a 24 day cycle and February I started spotting the 10th it lasted for 3 days and got heavier lasting for about 9/10 more days. This month March 19, 2017 its been about 39 days since my last period started I still haven’t started its a waiting game. I’m trying to conceive but its very hard for me to tell what’s going on down there or if I am even ovulating. Can any help me.

Hello… I’ve tried to research this via google and the web ect but I believe I have what you mention towards the end of your article… I end my period and then within 2 or 3 days have my EWCM… I am sure of it being exactly that. That tells me that I am ovulating and that I am most fertile then… What are the odds of me getting pregnant if I had sex the day before my period? I’m also thinking that like you said maybe this if from the cause of a hormonal imbalance?

    • May 24, 2017 By Nat Kringoudis 3:03 pm

It’s really hard for me to say with out seeing you but the odds are unlikely. x

  • July 27, 2017 By Rachel 12:46 pm

Thank you so much for this article, it’s so helpful.

I was wondering if I could get some advice.

I’m 24 and my husband and I are going to be starting to try for a family next month. With all the stories you hear of people having troubles getting pregnant, it has given me so much anxiety that I am almost scared to start trying because I’m worried it won’t happen right away.

I’m wondering if you can tell me if my cycle sounds normal or not.

I have a 28-29 day cycle and have never missed a period. Before my period starts I get this brown looking blood for a day or two. Then, I get really bad cramps for a couple of hours and then my period comes in relatively heavy. My cycle lasts about 4-5 days and gets very light by the last day. Other than the first day, my period doesn’t really affect my life. It can quite heavy at times but my cramps subside by the second day. I have googled and googled and can’t seem to find out if it’s normal to have brown blood before your period starts – is this normal? I think I definitely ovulate as I usually get little tiny pains in the lower abdomen and my cervical mucus turns very egg white-y for a day or two.

    Thank you so much.
