Busting through the breast cancer gene myths – a podcast with Dr Sherrill Sellman AND how you can ask her your own Q’s LIVE.

Once upon a time, there was a girl on a mission.  She strived to open and sometimes challenge the minds of people who’d listen.  Sometimes she struck land minds in doing so and other times she discovered gold nuggets.  It didn’t matter to her what she found – so long as she was living true to her vision and she shared from a genuine place of love and care, she was lead by her heart and strong calling to share wellness information.

That girl is me.  The feedback from last week has been phenomenal – my inbox has been flowing with so much love and support.  More than anything, it feels great to get a message across, even if it isn’t my specific message because women need to know this stuff and I extend my expertise to women’s health.  Women have a right to be educated when making long term health decisions that can impact them for the rest of their life (and let’s face it, fertility too!).

Last week I challenged the idea that mastectomies are not the only choice or option as a preventative treatment.  It’s fair to say it sparked up some very emotional discussion – and rightly so, some of what I was suggesting was confronting for some.

I promised I’d be back with some experts.  I’ve also managed to connect with scientists and specialists who’ll share with you in coming days.  BUT today; today, I’m speaking with THE hormone expert Dr Sherrill Sellman.  We’ve chatted before (listen to that here) about hormones and fertility, but Sherrill’s so very well researched when it comes to breast cancer – so much so, she wrote the book ‘What Women Must Know to Protect Their Daughters From Breast Cancer.’

Here’s what you will learn today:

  • the difference between genetic mutation and genetic expression  (Sherrill likens it to hardware and software)
  • BRCA1 & BRCA2 are tumour suppressor genes that either switch on or switch off (when they are working properly they will prevent tumours from growing and when they are compromised we see disease)
  • BRCA1 & BRCA2 fall into the category of gene EXPRESSIONS that can be altered, modified and impacted by environment, not mutations (like sickle cell          anaemia or having red hair)
  • how BRCA1 & BRCA2 expressions were discovered via women living near and exposed nuclear radiation
  • why we are seeing more younger women discovering breast cancer
  • how the environment influences how your bodies (and genes) behave
  • studies that support how genes behave and evidence of healing/prevention
  • we have an extreme power over our bodies to alter gene expression
  • what else plays a role in gene expression and what you can do to turn it around
  • how radiation (mammograms) are dangerous and linked to cancer and the effective alternatives
  • if you continue with a toxic lifestyle, a mastectomy won’t necessarily be a long lasting solution
  • how a mastectomy won’t protect you from cancer and the organs next in line if the breast tissue is removed
  • why fear is the biggest factor

So Sherryl is not a medical doctor?

  • May 24, 2013 By Sarah McKay 6:10 pm

Nat – I’ll try my hardest to be there as I think Sherrill is misguided. As a scientist, medical writer and consultant on breast cancer clinical guideline reviews I am very concerned that misinformation is being spread. BRCA1 (located on chromosome 17q21) and BRCA2 (located on chromosome 13q12.3) are tumor suppressor genes. Mutations on these genes lead to the inability to regulate cell death and therefore lead to uncontrolled cell growth resulting in cancer. BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations increase the relative risk of breast cancer by 10- to 20-fold. Epigenetic modification of these genes has no effect on their tumour supressing ability. It is a little like having a blackout … turning the lightswitch on or off isn’t going to make a difference to the lightbulb!

Thanks Sarah, this is awesome and the kind of Q’s Sherrill wants to be asked. If you can’t make it, I can always ask her this question on your behalf and the recording be played at anytime (as far as I understand).

I’ll pop it on my list but I’d love you to tune in.

    Hi Nat,

I like Sherrill’s take on things. There is logic to what she was saying and she had some evidence in there which was great to see. But I also know very little about this aspect of genetics so it will be good to hear more.

I may not be able to tune in tomorrow so I would really like if you could ask Sherrill a couple of questions from me. She mentioned towards the end of the interview about some research on fear and it’s impact on prognosis for breast cancer sufferers. I would like more detail around this research and the name of the researchers if possible so I can find out more. This study could have implications for the work I do as a psychologist.

I guess I am also interested in Sherrill’s thoughts about people who do their absolute best to eat well, excercise and carry a positive attitude, including those cancer sufferers who have chosen alternative treatments and who have still died in spite of this. I know a few people in this boat, wonderful people who fought very hard and never gave up until the end. I’m sure that you both realise that there are also people who do all the wrong things and never suffer from cancer (or anything else) and live to a ripe old age. What do you both make of this?

    Thanks.

I Nat, I’ve been following Sherill for a little while now, thanks to The Wellness Warrior introducing me to her. I know this is unrelated to breast cancer, but I’d love to know Sherill’s take on arthritis (especially in a person in their 30’s) and whether it’s related to inflamation? Anything she suggests as a treatment?

I’ve heard she recommends vitamin C for good health? Just wondering why and what sort of daily dosage?

    What’s Sherill’s take on sugar?

Thanks Nat, I’ll be tuning in. L

Awesome interview Nat and Sherrill. Thanks so much. I’d love to hear it again, if you have any plans to repost it that would be great. Time to get my adrenals back on track. Thanks again.

Can I listen to the Q&A anywhere now? I missed it but would love to hear what was discussed. I love Sherrill and everything she stands for, you too Nat 🙂
